Stocks opened modestly higher in early trading, as investors react to some better-than-expected retail sales reports for the month of August.

Major world markets are posting mostly higher results for Thursday. Frankfurt's DAX is down 0.16% and Paris' CAC is up 0.26%, Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 1.52%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed up 1.19%, and Sydney's All Ordinaries Index finished up 0.80%.
